Malware From Microsoft Office (Notice 2017-013)

This is a Fast-Air Tech Talk security notice. The Tech Talk security notice is a free service for all Fast-Air customers. Please suggest security notice topics.

A popular method for introducing malware onto computers is through Microsoft Office apps.

Two common methods are getting the user to execute macros in an attachment or linking to external programs through Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE).

Macros are easily controlled:

Enable or disable macros in Office files

Preventing attacks though DDE requires reading dialog prompts and trusting from whom the document is sent.

New Microsoft Word attacks infect PCs sans macros

The simplest precaution is never open attachments without first verifying from whom the attachment is from.
