This is a Fast-Air Tech Talk security notice. The Tech Talk security notice is a free service for all Fast-Air customers. Please suggest security notice topics.

Computers users often are urged to keep systems patched with the latest security updates.

One way malicious authors attempt to trick users into downloading their malware is to use phishing emails and web browser pop-ups encouraging users to download what appears to be the latest patch or security update.

Never respond to these types of emails or web browser pop-ups.

Never.

Reputable software vendors use built-in update checking features. Vendors do not send emails or use web browser pop-ups to inform users about software updates. Such tactics should be presumed to be phishing attacks. Related emails should be deleted permanently and related web browser pop-ups ignored. Web sites using such pop-ups should be avoided.
